ENGLISH LINGUISTICS I

ENGLISH LINGUISTICS I

This discipline is divided into two parts. An initial part that aims to introduce the students to Linguistics as a scientific field, presenting its basic concepts, history, methodology and technical terminology.

The second part will study the English language history from its beginning to the Modern times. This diachronic view must observe the origin of the language, its Indo-European historical birth, and the languages spoken in the British Isle before English. It also observes the major invasions into England, the most important moments of English language such as Old English, Middle English, and Modern English. Proper attention will be given to the syntactical and morphological changes in each of these periods. Finally, the varieties of English spoken in England and former colonies will be covered, prioritizing the British and American dialects.

Students are taught grammar communicatively within simulations of real-life situations. The course emphasizes language rules that govern syntax, morphology, phonetics, vocabulary, and pragmatics.
